Strangulation Prevention Training

Basic Training

Length: Segments of 1-4 hours

Recommended For:

  • Multi-disciplinary groups interested in learning the basics about the investigation, documentation, prosecution and advocacy of non-fatal strangulation cases.

This basic course is designed to provide an overview of key topics every professional needs to know about non-fatal strangulation and suffocation assaults. Attendees will learn about lethality, the rage of stranglers, the San Diego Study, medical and legal considerations as well as advocacy. All of our courses encourage communities to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to strangulation/suffocation cases.

One Day Training

Length: 6 or 8 hour versions

Recommended For:

  • Multi-disciplinary groups seeking to develop an integrated approach to responding to non-fatal strangulation cases.
  • Communities with mobilized coordinated community response teams, SART, DVRT, Family Justice Centers and/or High Risk Teams.

The course provides a more in-depth training on all the key topics every professional needs to know when handling a strangulation and/or suffocation cases. This course seeks to improve the investigation, the medical forensic exam/assessment, the prosecution and advocacy of the most high-risk cases they will handle in their careers. It also emphasizes the need and benefit of multi-disciplinary teams.

Two Day Training for Trainers/Specialists/Teams

Length: 2 days

Recommended For:

  • Multi-disciplinary groups who have already received training on the basics of the investigation, documentation, prosecution and advocacy of non-fatal strangulation cases and have developed an integrated approach to responding to non-fatal strangulation cases.
  • Communities with mobilized coordinated community response teams, SARTs, a DVRTs, Family Justice Centers and/or High Risk Teams.

This course is designed to support and train communities already working to improve outcomes in non-fatal strangulation cases who now want to start developing local trainers, specialists and implement regional and/or state protocols. This course provides two to three trainers who are experts in their field. It includes group exercises, case studies and challenges attendees to start analyzing their own community response.

Advanced Four Day Best Practices Training

Length: 4 days

Recommended For:

  • Multi-disciplinary groups who have already received training on the basics of the investigation, documentation, prosecution and advocacy of non-fatal strangulation cases; and have developed an integrated approach to responding to domestic violence, sexual assault and/or child abuse cases.
  • Communities seeking to significantly increase the prosecution rate of felony strangulation cases.
  • Communities who are highly motivated and mobilized with established coordinated community response teams, SART, DVRT, Family Justice Centers and/or High Risk Teams with strong partnerships with the medical community.

This course is our personal favorite. This is where transformation begins. It is specifically designed for the most passionate and committed communities who want to reduce domestic violence homicides and implement protocols, best practices, develop a core team of experts who can testify in court, incorporate specialized forms and develop a robust forensic medical component. This course provides attendees with the most in-depth training on every core topic. It includes more group exercises, more case studies and a review of emerging issues, new research and case law. This course provides a multi-disciplinary team of trainers/experts who work closely with attendees and encourage attendees to find solutions for their local challenges. Attendees develop a strategic plan and individual pitches to address a particular challenge they want to change in their community. Graduates from this course have passed legislation, implemented county and state-wide protocols, launched new programs, testified in court, reduced homicides. It’s inspirational.
