Breaking the Silence: A New Chapter at APD

Amidst a group of determined professionals, one passionate voice stood out. Inspired by the Advanced Course on Strangulation Prevention, a dedicated officer from the Anchorage Police Department stepped forward with a bold idea—one that had been a long time coming.
Her five-minute presentation wasn't just another slide deck. It was a call to action. A vision for change. She proposed the creation of a brand-new Domestic Violence Unit, one that would include specialized detectives focused solely on serious strangulation cases.
The message resonated. The leadership listened. And then—they acted.
Now, for the first time in APD’s history, new positions for Strangulation Detectives have been created and posted. She’s already applied. And the roadmap for the new DV unit is officially in motion.
What started as a course requirement became a catalyst for change. Cheers to continuing progress—and to every voice brave enough to speak up for those who can't.
